Film Friday #2 - The Art of Getting By.

Here comes the second instalment of Film Friday.
I haven't really been watching a whole lot of films this week but one I've been reaching for again and again is 'The Art of Getting By'.

A brilliantly honest film starring Freddie Highmore and Emma Roberts.
The films protagonist (Highmore) is in a bit of a dilemma.
He's failing.
Has no aspirations.
But biggest of all, he doesn't care.
Our lead finds himself in a state of nothingness.
Until Emma Roberts enters his life and changes it.
Shows how he can have friends and how he can have fun and to make the most of every moment.

On the surface this film seems like a typical "blah blah boy likes girl, girl doesn't like boy blah blah blah!" but it isn't.
There's something depressingly relatable about this film.
You can identify with each character and it's like you're on a journey.

A journey of each characters self discovery and in fact our own.

This film is a quiet voice, it isn't trying to be anything.
It just is.
It isn't loud or brash or in your face it just lets you watch the film and be done.
You then go on and live your life.

Except you don't, you're inevitably affected by the message this film conveys.
And the message is subjective.
It's different with each person that watches it.

And that's what I absolutely adore with it!
It affects everyone differently and it each person will take away something differently.
Gavin Wiesen (Dir) does an excellent job at capturing emotion.

It's very rare these days that there is a film that isn't followed by 700 sequels, spin off's and a trail of remakes.
You don't want anything else with this film.
It's complete.

Have you ever seen this film?
What did you think?

Much love
Deanna xo
